Portable power stations from BLUETTI, EcoFlow, and Anker SOLIX are marketed increasingly as "home battery alternatives" at prices 30–50% below purpose-built residential batteries. The pricing is real but the comparison is misleading. Portable units are designed for camping, RV, and job-site use — their permanent-install certification, warranty infrastructure, and cell-level safety engineering are not at the level of residential batteries like Enphase IQ, Tesla Powerwall 3, or Franklin WH aPower 2. For a permanent home battery, NuWatt recommends the Enphase IQ Battery 5P as the closest price-competitive alternative with full 15-year warranty and UL 9540 certification.
Portable power stations are great for camping, RV trips, tailgating, and job sites. They are NOT substitutes for a permanent residential battery installation. NuWatt does not install portable power stations for permanent home backup — the warranty, certification, and safety tradeoffs aren't worth the upfront savings.
UL 9540 certification varies by install configuration. Purpose-built home batteries (Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ, Franklin WH) are UL 9540 certified for permanent residential installation out of the box. Portable power stations often advertise "UL certified" but the specific UL 9540 certification for permanent stationary installation depends on the product configuration — and many portable models don't qualify in their default packaging. This is a real inspection and interconnection issue with local AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction).
Warranty years vs cycles: EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra carries a 5-year warranty, half the 10-year minimum for purpose-built residential batteries. Over a 15-year home ownership horizon, you'll pass out of warranty with 10+ years left. BLUETTI and Anker SOLIX offer 10-year warranties on their newer home-oriented products, but the warranty service infrastructure in the US is limited compared to Tesla, Enphase, or Franklin WH.
Parent company FEOC exposure. BLUETTI (Shenzhen PowerOak), EcoFlow (Shenzhen-based), and Anker (Anker Innovations, Hong Kong-listed) are all Chinese-owned companies. For residential installs this was moot after Section 25D expired in December 2025. For commercial solar+storage projects subject to Section 48/48E Foreign Entity of Concern restrictions, FEOC exposure is a direct tax-credit qualification issue — and the domestic content adder is explicitly unavailable.
Permanent install infrastructure. Home batteries are wired permanently into your main electrical panel, usually via an automatic transfer switch or a battery backup panel. They engage seamlessly during an outage in <20 milliseconds. Portable power stations must be either physically plugged in to an extension cord from which critical loads are run (clunky), or hard-wired via an add-on transfer switch that the manufacturer may or may not support at the UL level.
Customer support and field service. When a Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ Battery, or Franklin aPower 2 has a field issue, there's a mature dealer + manufacturer service network that handles the claim end-to-end. When a BLUETTI, EcoFlow, or Anker SOLIX has a field issue, the homeowner typically ships the unit back to a regional service center in a box. That's a long outage for a permanent home battery.
The honest pricing comparison. BLUETTI EP900 + B500 runs $5,500–$8,500 installed (where "installed" means plugged in, not permanently wired). Enphase IQ Battery 5P runs $7,500–$9,500 installed with full permanent interconnection, UL 9540 certification, automatic transfer, and a 15-year warranty. The $2,000 gap isn't a "rip-off" — it's the cost of proper permanent installation, certification, and warranty infrastructure.
To be completely fair: portable power stations are genuinely good products for their intended use case. A BLUETTI AC500 + B300S is an excellent camping battery, job-site power source, or RV house battery. An EcoFlow DELTA Pro is one of the best semi-portable solutions for someone who wants backup power they can wheel around. Anker SOLIX has some legitimately interesting home battery products in their newer lineup. The problem is not the products themselves — it's that consumer marketing has blurred the line between "portable power station" and "home battery" in a way that leads homeowners to compare incompatible products on price alone. If you're shopping for permanent residential backup, compare against Tesla, Enphase, Franklin WH, and sonnen. If you're shopping for portable power, compare Anker, EcoFlow, BLUETTI, Jackery, and Goal Zero.

Usually no. The federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for home batteries requires the battery to be permanently installed as part of a residential solar + storage system. A portable power station that's plugged into a wall outlet is not a "permanent installation" under the ITC rules. Some newer home-oriented products from Anker SOLIX and EcoFlow are starting to qualify when installed through a certified electrician as a permanent system, but this is product-and-configuration specific — consult a tax professional and your installer before assuming the credit applies.
For camping and RV use: EcoFlow DELTA 2, Jackery Explorer series, Goal Zero Yeti, Bluetti AC200P. For job-site / construction power: Bluetti EP500, EcoFlow DELTA Pro. For semi-permanent use like powering a hunting cabin or backup for essential loads where you're home to plug things in manually: Anker SOLIX F3800. These are all legitimate products in their intended use cases. NuWatt just doesn't install any of them as permanent home batteries because the certification, warranty, and safety engineering aren't designed for that role.

Maybe, maybe not — it varies by jurisdiction and by the specific product model and install configuration. Many AHJs require UL 9540 certification for permanent residential battery installations, and not all portable-derived products carry that certification in every configuration. Before buying a portable unit with the intent of wiring it into your home permanently, check with your electrician and local permitting office.
