Get a Free QuoteUp to $8,500 standard ($2,650/ton) — or up to $16,000 income-based, with a no-cost Turnkey path. Wondering what happened to the old $10,000 rebate? We answer that below. Plus the 0% HEAT Loan to $25K. The federal 25C credit is gone; Massachusetts incentives are stronger than ever.

Massachusetts offers up to $9,500 in standard Mass Save heat pump rebates and bonuses in 2026 ($8,500 rebate at $2,650/ton + $500 sizing + $500 weatherization). Income-qualified households can go up to $16,000 for an air-source heat pump — or no cost via the Turnkey program. The old $10,000 whole-home cap is retired; see the comparison below. No federal 25C credit — it expired Dec 31, 2025. Heat pump water heaters receive a separate $750 rebate. Finance remaining costs with the 0% HEAT Loan up to $25,000.

If you searched for a “$10,000 heat pump rebate,” that was the prior program year's whole-home cap. Here is exactly what replaced it — and why income-qualified households can now go higher than $10,000.
No. The $10,000 whole-home cap belonged to the prior program year and is no longer the 2026 number. For 2026, the whole-home rebate is $2,650 per ton, capped at $8,500 (a higher per-ton rate than the retired $1,250-per-ton structure), plus a $500 sizing bonus and $500 weatherization bonus for up to $9,500 in standard incentives. Income-qualified households can exceed the old figure entirely: enhanced incentives reach up to $16,000 for an air-source heat pump, with a no-cost path through the Mass Save Turnkey program.

Federal 25C Tax Credit: EXPIRED. The Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit ended December 31, 2025. Any website or contractor claiming you can get a $2,000 federal tax credit for a heat pump in 2026 is providing outdated information. NuWatt's calculations reflect $0 in federal tax credits.
Mass Save structures heat pump rebates in three tiers based on how much of your home's heating load the heat pump will serve. The more fossil fuel heating you displace, the higher your per-ton rebate.
Primary heating source
Cap: $8,500 maximum
3-ton system = $7,950 | 4-ton = $8,500 (capped)
Supplemental heating
Cap: $8,500 maximum
4-ton system = $4,500 | 8-ton = $8,500 (capped)
Single-zone / supplemental
Cap: $2,500 maximum
5-ton system = $1,250 | 10-ton = $2,500 (capped)
Earned when your system is properly sized via Manual J load calculation. Prevents oversizing and ensures optimal performance. NuWatt includes Manual J at no additional cost.
Available when insulation or air sealing work is completed within 12 months of your heat pump installation. Insulation improvements are also available through Mass Save at 75-100% off.
Mass Save offers a separate $750 rebate for qualifying heat pump water heaters (HPWH). HPWHs use the same heat-pump technology to heat water 2-3x more efficiently than conventional electric water heaters. They must be ENERGY STAR certified and installed by a Mass Save network contractor.

Two dates matter in 2026. As of January 1, 2026, the EPA prohibits new heat pump installs using a refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential above 700 — which includes R-410A — and R-410A equipment was removed from the Mass Save Heat Pump Qualified Products List (HPQPL). There is a short grace window for rebates: an R-410A system installed on or before March 31, 2026 is still rebate-eligible, but installs from April 1, 2026 onward are not. The industry has moved to A2L refrigerants — R-454B and R-32.
New installs using refrigerant with GWP > 700 (incl. R-410A) prohibited. R-410A removed from HPQPL.
R-410A installs on/before this date stay rebate-eligible. From Apr 1, 2026: no Mass Save rebate.
Removed from the Mass Save qualified products list and banned from new installs by the EPA as of Jan 1, 2026. Installs from Apr 1, 2026 onward receive no Mass Save rebate.
Used by Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, LG, and Daikin. Mildly flammable (A2L class). Strong cold-climate performance. Most popular option for ductless systems.
Used by Carrier, Lennox, Trane, and Bosch. Lowest GWP option available. Mildly flammable (A2L class). Most common in ducted systems.
What does this mean for you? A 2026 quote that still lists R-410A equipment is a red flag — it cannot be newly installed after the EPA ban, and unless it goes in by March 31, 2026 it earns zero Mass Save rebate. Make sure your contractor is quoting A2L equipment (R-454B or R-32). NuWatt only installs rebate-qualifying A2L systems, so your incentives are protected.

Your Mass Save rebate is more than a one-time check — it is also the trigger for an ongoing winter discount. Eversource, National Grid, and Unitil now apply lower electric delivery charges from November 1 through April 30 for heat pump households. The program launched November 1, 2025, and the state reports average savings of about $540 per household per winter.

How enrollment works: It is automatic. Households that received a qualifying Mass Save heat pump rebate — or installed a qualifying heat pump since January 1, 2019 — are enrolled in the seasonal rate without a separate application. That is the key link: the same rebate that lowers your install cost also flips on a winter discount that pays you back year after year. See the full seasonal heat pump rate guide.
Awarded when your heat pump is properly sized using a Manual J load calculation. This professional engineering calculation analyzes your home's insulation levels, air infiltration rate, window types and sizes, orientation, and local climate data to determine the exact heating and cooling load.
Available when insulation or air sealing work is completed within 12 months of your heat pump installation. Mass Save offers free home energy assessments and subsidized insulation (75-100% off) making this bonus easy to earn while improving your home's thermal envelope.

Check My EligibilityIncome-qualified Massachusetts households have access to the most generous heat pump incentives in the country. Enhanced incentives reach up to $16,000 for an air-source heat pump (and up to $25,000 for ground-source). For eligible households, the Mass Save Turnkey program can take a qualifying installation all the way to no cost.
The enhanced air-source heat pump incentive goes up to $16,000 (ground-source up to $25,000). The Turnkey program can cover an eligible install entirely — equipment, installation, and necessary electrical work — for qualifying households. Check eligibility on our Mass Save income-eligible guide.
Your heat pump must be installed between January 1 and December 31, 2026, and the rebate application submitted by February 28, 2027 to qualify for 2026 program year rebates. Mass Save rebate budgets are allocated annually and can be exhausted before this deadline. NuWatt recommends starting the process as early as possible to secure your rebate.
