The inverter converts DC power from solar panels to AC power for your home. It's the second most important component after the panels themselves. The choice between microinverters (one per panel) and string inverters (one for the whole system) depends on your roof shading, design complexity, and budget. Battery-ready inverters are increasingly important for future storage additions.

Industry standard microinverter. Per-panel optimization means shade on one panel doesn't affect the rest. No high-voltage DC on the roof improves safety. 25-year warranty matches panel lifespan. Panel-level monitoring catches issues instantly.
Best choice for large, unshaded roof systems. 99% peak efficiency is the highest available. Built-in battery and EV charger integration through the SolarEdge ecosystem. Lower cost per watt than microinverters for systems over 8 kW.
One unit handles 4 panels instead of one — dramatically reducing installation time and cost. At $100-$130 per panel equivalent, it's 30-40% cheaper than Enphase. Great for budget-conscious installations where Enphase's premium features aren't needed.
Microinverters (Enphase, Hoymiles) are better for complex roofs with shading, multiple orientations, or small systems. String inverters (SolarEdge) are more cost-effective for large, unshaded, single-orientation roofs.
If you plan to add a battery, choose accordingly. Enphase microinverters pair with Enphase batteries. SolarEdge pairs with SolarEdge batteries or Tesla Powerwall. Planning ahead avoids costly inverter replacement later.
Enphase offers 25 years standard. SolarEdge offers 12 years base (extendable to 25 for $400-$600). Hoymiles offers 12 years. Since the inverter is the most likely component to need replacement, longer warranty = better peace of mind.
Both Enphase and SolarEdge offer panel-level production monitoring. String inverters without optimizers only show whole-system production, making it hard to detect individual panel issues.
