Solar + Partial-Home Backup Battery + Heat Pump
In a fully electrified home, your battery must handle more than just lights and a refrigerator. A heat pump draws 2-5 kW continuously, and an EV charger adds 7-10 kW. The partial-home backup tier (10-15 kWh) provides 8-16 hours of backup coverage for Houston, TX.
A partial-home battery can power a single-zone heat pump (ductless mini-split) during outages but cannot sustain a central ducted system. Choose circuits carefully to keep at least one heating zone active.
Solar recharges the battery during daytime outages. With a 12kW array producing 14,400 kWh/year in 77008, the battery cycles daily for time-of-use optimization and stays topped off for emergencies.
