Backup power + ConnectedSolutions income. Protect your home and earn.
Massachusetts homeowners are installing batteries at record pace — not just for storm backup, but to earn $225–$3,250/year through ConnectedSolutions demand response. No federal tax credit needed.

Storm protection, passive income, and energy independence — all in one box on your wall.
Massachusetts averages 8+ hours of outages per year. Batteries keep your lights, fridge, and internet running when the grid goes down during winter storms.
Earn $225-$3,250/year by letting your battery support the grid during peak demand. Eversource pays $275/kW summer, National Grid pays $225/kW.
Charge your battery when electricity is cheap and discharge during peak rates. Eversource and National Grid TOU plans amplify savings.
Store excess solar production during the day and use it at night instead of buying from the grid. Maximize every kWh your panels produce.
Massachusetts' demand response program pays you to discharge your battery during peak grid demand. Events are capped at 60 hours/year. Your backup reserve is always protected.
Have a qualifying battery installed by a participating installer.
Your installer handles enrollment. Set your backup reserve level.
Battery discharges during peak events. You set it and forget it.
Receive quarterly payments based on enrolled capacity and performance.
| Battery | Example | Eversource/yr | National Grid/yr |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kWh / 3.84 kW | Enphase IQ 5P (x1) | $1,248 | $1,056 |
| 10 kWh / 5 kW | sonnenCore+ / SolarEdge | $1,625 | $1,375 |
| 10 kWh / 7.68 kW | Enphase IQ 5P (x2) | $2,496 | $2,112 |
| 13.5 kWh / 11.5 kW | Tesla Powerwall 3 | $3,738 | $3,163 |
| 15 kWh / 10 kW | Franklin aPower2 | $3,250 | $2,750 |
| 20 kWh / 8 kW | sonnen ecoLinx 20 | $2,600 | $2,200 |
Revenue based on enrolled power capacity (kW), not energy capacity (kWh). Actual earnings depend on dispatch events called.
Unitil customers: not eligible
Unitil Energy (Fitchburg, Lunenburg area) and municipal light plants do not participate in ConnectedSolutions. You can still install a battery for backup power and solar self-consumption.
We install all major brands. Every battery below is ConnectedSolutions-compatible and backed by NuWatt's workmanship warranty.
| Battery | Capacity | Power Output | Installed Price | Warranty | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Powerwall 3 Integrated inverter, highest power output | 13.5 kWh | 11.5 kW continuous | $12,500-$14,500 | 10 years | Whole-home backup |
| Enphase IQ Battery 5P Modular — add units as needed | 5 kWh per unit | 3.84 kW per unit | $5,500-$7,000 | 15 years | Scalable systems |
| Franklin aPower2 American-made, LFP chemistry | 15 kWh | 10 kW continuous | $13,000-$15,500 | 12 years | Long cycle life |
| sonnen ecoLinx Smart home integration, 10,000+ cycles | 10-20 kWh | 4.8-8 kW | $15,000-$25,000 | 10 years / 10,000 cycles | Premium smart homes |
Prices include installation, permitting, and ConnectedSolutions enrollment. Actual pricing varies by site conditions.
No federal residential battery tax credit in 2026. ConnectedSolutions income is the primary way to offset costs.
$8,500–$16,000
Battery + installation, no solar
$6,500–$13,000
Battery added to new solar install (bundled savings)
4-5 years
Eversource, 10 kW battery. National Grid: 5-6 years. Without ConnectedSolutions: 12-15+ years.
The residential clean energy credit (Section 25D) expired December 31, 2025. There is no federal tax credit for residential battery purchases in 2026. Massachusetts compensates through ConnectedSolutions demand response income, which can offset 30-50% of battery cost within the first 5 years on Eversource territory.
Lowest total cost. Full ownership from day one. All ConnectedSolutions income goes to you. Typical payback 4-6 years with demand response.
$0 down, 5-25 year terms at 6-8% APR. ConnectedSolutions payments often cover a significant portion of the monthly loan payment. You own the battery.
Lease or PPA from a third-party owner. They claim the commercial Section 48 ITC and pass savings to you as a lower monthly rate. No upfront cost, but ConnectedSolutions income goes to the owner.
How long your battery lasts depends on capacity and which loads you back up. Essential loads (fridge, lights, Wi-Fi) draw less power than whole-home backup.
| Battery System | Essential Loads | Coverage | Whole Home | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kWh (Enphase 5P x1) | Fridge, lights, Wi-Fi, phone charging | 8-12 hours | — | Not recommended |
| 10 kWh (Enphase 5P x2) | Fridge, lights, Wi-Fi, sump pump, TV | 16-24 hours | All essentials + AC/heat pump | 4-6 hours |
| 13.5 kWh (Powerwall 3) | All essentials + occasional heavy loads | 24-36 hours | Full home excluding EV charging | 6-10 hours |
| 20 kWh (sonnen / 2x Powerwall) | Multi-day outage coverage | 36-48+ hours | Full home including heat pump | 10-16 hours |
Runtimes assume no solar recharging. With solar, daytime backup is essentially unlimited for essential loads.

Real feedback from NuWatt battery storage customers.
“Our Powerwall 3 kept the whole house running during the January ice storm. 36 hours without grid power and we never noticed. Plus the ConnectedSolutions checks are a nice bonus — about $280/month in summer.”
“We added two Enphase 5P batteries to our existing solar system. The modular approach let us start small and expand later. NuWatt handled all the ConnectedSolutions paperwork — we just get quarterly payments now.”
“After losing power for 3 days during a nor'easter last year, we knew we needed a battery. The Franklin aPower2 was the right choice — American-made and 12-year warranty. Installation took one day.”
