In Massachusetts, the VPP program is called ConnectedSolutions. It's run by Eversource and National Grid and is one of the highest-paying residential demand response programs in the United States.

Unitil Energy (Fitchburg, Lunenburg area) and municipal light plants do not participate in ConnectedSolutions. You can still install a battery for backup power and solar self-consumption.
ConnectedSolutions pays based on dispatch power (kW). Batteries with higher power output earn more, even if they have the same energy capacity (kWh).

ConnectedSolutions + Solar Savings + TOU + SMART 3.0
When you pair a battery with a new solar installation under the SMART 3.0 program, you earn an additional storage adder on top of your base SMART rate. This incentive recognizes the grid value of solar + storage systems that can dispatch energy when the grid needs it most.
The storage adder increases your per-kWh SMART compensation rate above the base solar-only rate for the life of the SMART contract.
SMART contracts run 10-20 years. The storage adder locks in additional income for the full contract duration, providing predictable long-term returns.
The SMART 3.0 storage adder is separate from ConnectedSolutions. You earn both simultaneously -- ConnectedSolutions for dispatch events and SMART for solar generation.
NuWatt handles the entire enrollment process. Here's what happens behind the scenes.
We evaluate your energy usage, utility, and backup goals. We size your battery for maximum ConnectedSolutions income while maintaining adequate backup reserve.
Licensed electricians install your battery, configure dispatch settings, and set your backup reserve level. Typical installation is completed in one day.
We submit all enrollment paperwork to Eversource or National Grid, register your battery in the dispatch system, and verify connectivity.
Once enrolled, your battery automatically participates in dispatch events. You receive quarterly payments. Set it and forget it.
The residential clean energy credit (Section 25D) expired December 31, 2025. There is no federal tax credit for residential battery purchases in 2026. Massachusetts compensates through ConnectedSolutions income, which can offset 30-50% of battery cost within the first 5 years on Eversource territory. Third-party owned batteries (lease/PPA) may qualify for the commercial Section 48 ITC through the July 4, 2026 construction deadline.
