RI solar costs $2.85–$3.25/W installed. The federal ITC is $0. But with REG paying $0.27/kWh for 15–20 years, RI has the fastest solar payback in New England. Here is exactly what you should pay.
Three panel tiers, transparent $/W pricing. All include Enphase microinverters, IronRidge racking, permitting, and 25-year monitoring. 8 kW reference system.
Best for: Fastest payback, budget-conscious buyers
Best for: Propel lease users, FEOC-required
Best for: Maximum efficiency, highest REG income
Every price above is the real, post-ITC cost. The Section 25D residential solar tax credit expired December 31, 2025. If another installer shows you a quote with a 30% federal credit deduction, that number is wrong. Ask them to remove it and re-quote at the actual price.
Based on a typical $24,400 (8 kW at $3.05/W) RI installation. Every component is itemized so you can compare quotes line by line.
If you are being quoted $3.50/W or more for a standard residential system, you are paying excessive overhead. At $3.50/W, an 8 kW system costs $28,000 instead of $24,400 \u2014 that is $3,600 in extra cost with no additional value. Common causes: national-chain markup, hidden dealer fees in financing, or sales commission structures that inflate pricing.
| City | Price Range | Average | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Providence | $2.75–$3.15/W | $2.95/W | Metro-area competitive pricing |
| Warwick | $2.70–$3.10/W | $2.90/W | Suburban, good roof access |
| Cranston | $2.70–$3.10/W | $2.90/W | Providence metro suburban |
| Newport | $2.80–$3.20/W | $3.00/W | Coastal premium, salt-air hardware |
| Pawtucket | $2.65–$3.05/W | $2.85/W | Lower range, competitive market |
| Woonsocket | $2.65–$3.05/W | $2.85/W | Northern RI, affordable |
| East Providence | $2.70–$3.10/W | $2.90/W | Good suburban pricing |
| Westerly | $2.80–$3.20/W | $3.00/W | South County coastal premium |
Coastal cities (Newport, Westerly) run $0.10–$0.15/W higher due to salt-air rated hardware. All prices include Enphase microinverters and permitting. All RI cities use RI Energy (except Pascoag: Burrillville area).
Most states lost their fastest payback pathway when the federal ITC expired. Rhode Island did not \u2014 because the REG program was always more valuable than the ITC.
The old 30% ITC on a $24,400 system was $7,320 (one-time). The REG program pays $2,640/year for 15 years = $39,600. That is 5.4x more value. Even without the ITC, RI solar economics are stronger than any other New England state with the ITC intact. The REG program is the reason.
RI market average is $3.03/W. Anything over $3.35/W for a standard system signals excessive overhead, dealer fees, or national-chain markup. Always compare at least 2 quotes.
The Section 25D residential ITC expired December 31, 2025. Any quote showing a 30% or $9,000 credit is using outdated or dishonest numbers.
An RI installer who does not discuss REG enrollment is leaving $40,000–$50,000+ on the table. This is the single most important incentive in RI.
Some loan products include 20–30% dealer fees hidden in the interest rate. A $24,000 system may actually cost $31,000 financed. Ask for the total amount paid over the loan term.
Real $/W pricing for your specific roof, city, and panel choice. REG income projections, REF rebate calculations, and honest payback timelines. No inflated ITC numbers. No hidden fees.
