Austin solar costs $2.10–$2.50/W, but the $2,500 Austin Energy rebate + Value of Solar at 9.91¢/kWh make it the best solar deal in Texas with a 6-8-year payback. No federal 25D credit, but Austin's municipal utility incentives more than compensate. A 10 kW system costs ~$20,500 net after the rebate.

2026 Alert: The federal residential solar tax credit (Section 25D) expired December 31, 2025 — $0 for cash/loan purchases. However, Austin Energy's $2,500 rebate + Value of Solar tariff make Austin the exception where solar still delivers excellent returns despite the federal credit loss.
Austin is the only major Texas city where your net solar cost is below the gross price — thanks to the Austin Energy rebate.
To receive the $2,500 rebate, your solar installation must be completed by a contractor on Austin Energy's Approved Solar Contractor list. This is a hard requirement — using a non-approved installer means forfeiting the rebate entirely. Check the current list on Austin Energy's website before signing any contract. NuWatt Energy partners exclusively with Austin Energy-approved contractors in the Austin service area.
Austin Energy's Value of Solar (VoS) tariff is fundamentally different from net metering. Understanding how it works is essential to accurately projecting your savings.
Every kWh you consume from the grid costs the full Austin Energy retail rate (~12¢/kWh). Solar that you consume directly offsets this cost entirely.
Every kWh your solar exports to the grid earns 9.91¢/kWh as a credit on your bill. This is about 83% of the retail rate — generous compared to most Texas buyback plans.
Unused export credits carry forward month to month. However, any remaining credits expire at the end of the calendar year (December billing cycle). This means spring/fall overproduction credits can offset summer AC usage.
The VoS rate is recalculated each year based on Austin Energy's avoided costs, capacity value, environmental benefits, and fuel savings. The current rate of 9.91¢/kWh is effective for 2026.
Fuel and purchased power that Austin Energy does not need to buy when your solar is producing
Power plant infrastructure Austin Energy does not need to build or maintain
Reduced transmission and distribution losses from local generation
Carbon reduction and air quality benefits valued by Austin's climate goals
Protection against future natural gas price increases
With traditional 1:1 net metering (like TXU retail-match in Dallas), every kWh exported offsets a kWh of consumption at full retail price. At Austin's ~12¢ retail rate, 1:1 net metering would give 12¢ per exported kWh. The VoS rate of 9.91¢ is less than 1:1 net metering. However, the $2,500 upfront rebate more than compensates for this difference over the life of the system. Austin's combined incentive package (rebate + VoS) delivers a shorter payback than any deregulated Texas market with any REP buyback plan.
Austin Energy is a regulated municipal utility. You cannot choose your provider, but you get benefits that deregulated markets (Houston, Dallas) do not offer.
| Metric | Austin (Municipal) | Houston/Dallas (Deregulated) |
|---|---|---|
| Solar rebate | $2,500 flat | $0 (no utility rebates) |
| Export credit | 9.91¢/kWh (VoS) | 3-8.5¢/kWh (REP choice) |
| Retail rate | ~12¢/kWh | ~14-15¢/kWh |
| REP shopping | No (municipal) | Yes (15+ REPs) |
| Payback period | 6-8 years | 9-11 years |
| Credit rollover | Monthly (expire Dec) | Varies by REP |
| Contractor choice | Must be AE-approved | Any licensed installer |
| Interconnection | Austin Energy direct | Through TDU (Oncor/CNP) |
Despite lower retail electricity rates and the approved-contractor requirement, Austin delivers a 6-8-year payback versus 9-11 years in Houston and Dallas. The $2,500 rebate is an immediate cost reduction that no deregulated market can match. The VoS tariff at 9.91¢/kWh is higher than most REP buyback plans (the average is ~6¢/kWh). Austin residents do lose the flexibility to shop for REPs, but for solar economics, the municipal utility structure is a clear advantage.
Travis County has the lowest property tax rate among major Texas metro counties, but the 100% exemption still provides meaningful savings.
File Form 50-123 with the Travis Central Appraisal District (TCAD) by April 30 following your solar installation. This is separate from your homestead exemption and is not automatic. While Travis County's 1.98% rate is lower than Harris County (2.31%) or Dallas County (2.17%), the exemption still saves $455 per year in the first decade. Combined with the $2,500 rebate and VoS credits, Austin homeowners have three distinct financial incentives that no other Texas city can match.
Five factors combine to make Austin the best solar market in Texas — and one of the best in the southern United States.
The only remaining major solar rebate in Texas. Reduces net cost to ~$20,500 for a 10 kW system. No other TX utility offers anything comparable in 2026.
Higher than most REP buyback plans in deregulated markets. Predictable annual recalculation provides long-term certainty for financial modeling.
Tied with San Antonio for highest in major TX metros. A 10 kW system produces 16,500 kWh/year — 20% above the national average for comparable systems.
Austin has one of the highest per-capita solar adoption rates in the South. Strong green building ordinances, community solar support, and environmental awareness drive demand.
No REP shopping needed. No contract switching. One utility, one rate, one interconnection process. Austin Energy's municipal status provides long-term program stability.
Shortest payback of any major Texas metro. Even without the federal 25D credit, the combination of rebate, VoS, and property tax exemption delivers strong returns within a decade.
Austin Energy's retail rate of ~12¢/kWh is lower than deregulated markets like Dallas (~15¢) and Houston (~14¢). This means each kWh of solar that you self-consume saves less per kWh than it would in DFW. However, the $2,500 rebate and 9.91¢ VoS rate more than offset this difference. The net payback in Austin (6-8 years) is still 2-4 years shorter than any deregulated market.

Homeowners who purchase solar with cash or a loan receive $0 in federal tax credits. Section 25D expired December 31, 2025.
CenterPoint delivery area. Deregulated — choose a solar buyback REP for best export value. High humidity reduces panel efficiency slightly. Strong solar irradiance despite cloud cover. Largest TX solar market by installed capacity.

When you select Austin in the calculator, the $2,500 Austin Energy rebate is automatically applied to the net cost calculation. This is the only Texas metro where a local rebate reduces your system cost. The VoS rate of 9.91¢/kWh is used for export value calculation.
The calculator reflects $0 federal tax credit for cash and loan purchases. Section 25D expired December 31, 2025. Programs like Propel Solar use a third-party owner to claim the 30% commercial ITC (Section 48/48E) for projects beginning construction before July 4, 2026.
Austin Energy's Value of Solar rate is declining. Propel Solar offers $0 down, a fixed monthly payment, and full ownership by year 5.
A third-party financing company owns your system and captures the 30% Section 48 commercial ITC — savings that homeowners cannot access since 25D expired. That tax benefit funds your $0 upfront cost.
If your Austin Energy bill is $140/mo, your Propel payment is approximately $126/mo — saving roughly 10% from day one. The payment is fixed and predictable, unlike utility rates that increase annually.
Full ownership transfers to you after approximately 5 years at no additional cost. Silfab 440W American-made panels with free maintenance during the financing period. You own the panels for the remaining 20+ years of their lifespan.
Austin already has the best solar economics in Texas thanks to the $2,500 rebate and VoS tariff. Propel Solar is ideal for Austin homeowners who prefer $0 down rather than paying ~$20,500 upfront. The third-party owner handles maintenance, monitoring, and warranty claims during the financing period.
