Heat pump water heaters use 60-70% less electricity than standard electric tanks. Energize CT offers a $750 rebate for all homeowners, and income-eligible households can get one installed for free through HES-IE. The remaining cost qualifies for 0.99% APR Smart-E Loan financing.

A heat pump water heater (HPWH) extracts heat from the surrounding air and transfers it to your water tank -- the same principle as a heat pump for your home, but applied to hot water. Instead of generating heat directly with an electric element, it moves existing heat, which is dramatically more efficient.
The result: 60-70% less electricity to heat the same amount of water. Most units include a backup electric element for high-demand periods. As a bonus, they produce cool, dehumidified air -- a welcome side effect in a Connecticut basement during humid summers.
With a Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) of 3.39 to 3.75, today's HPWHs are nearly four times more efficient than standard electric tanks (UEF ~0.95). That efficiency gap translates directly into lower utility bills every month.

Most models include 10-year tank warranty
All models below meet Energize CT requirements (UEF 2+) and are eligible for the $750 rebate. Prices include equipment only -- installation is separate.

HPWHs heat water more slowly than gas, so sizing up is recommended. When in doubt, choose 80 gallons.
Connecticut homeowners can significantly reduce the cost of a heat pump water heater through the Energize CT $750 rebate. Income-eligible households through HES-IE can receive a HPWH at no cost.
Households at or below 60% of State Median Income (or enrolled in LIHEAP, utility hardship rate, or Operation Fuel) can receive a heat pump water heater at no cost through the HES-IE program. Equipment, installation, and any necessary electrical work are fully covered. Contact Energize CT at 877-947-3873 to check eligibility.
The HES-IE program covers 100% of HPWH costs including 240V electrical work, condensate drain installation, and all plumbing connections.
How much you save depends on what you are replacing. The biggest savings come from replacing electric resistance water heaters -- the most common type in Connecticut.
HPWH uses 60-70% less electricity than standard electric tank
Modest savings at CT gas rates. Best for replacing an old or failing gas unit.
Eliminates oil-fired water heating. No more fuel deliveries for hot water.
Savings calculated using CT average electricity rate of $0.27/kWh (Eversource) and $0.28/kWh (UI). Actual savings depend on household hot water usage, equipment selection, and installation location.
Heat pump water heaters require slightly more space and infrastructure than standard water heaters. Connecticut basements typically provide ideal conditions -- here is what your home needs.
Same as electric dryer. Most CT homes have capacity, but panel space must be verified by electrician.
Standard basement, garage, or utility room. Cannot be in a small closet — needs air circulation.
HPWH produces condensation — needs floor drain nearby or condensate pump (adds $100-200).
HPWH extracts heat from surrounding air. Produces cool, dehumidified air — bonus in summer, minor heating effect in winter.
Most models run 45-55 dB (dishwasher level). Stiebel Eltron is quietest at 37 dB. Locate away from bedrooms.
Standard 3/4" connections — same as existing water heater in most cases.
Most Connecticut homes have full basements with ample space for a HPWH. The 700+ cubic feet requirement is easily met by a typical unfinished basement. In summer, the HPWH actively dehumidifies the space -- a significant bonus in CT's humid climate. In winter, CT basements typically stay 55-65 degrees Fahrenheit, which is adequate for heat pump operation. If your water heater is currently in a small closet, relocation to the basement may be necessary (plan for additional plumbing costs of $300-600).
After the $750 Energize CT rebate, you can finance the remaining balance at just 0.99% APR through the CT Green Bank Smart-E Loan. This near-zero interest rate is available through March 31, 2026. Here is what that looks like for a typical installation.
10-year term
~$22/mo
Total interest paid
$128
Smart-E Loan through CT Green Bank. No origination fees, no prepayment penalty. Terms from 5-15 years available. 0.99% APR rate guaranteed through March 31, 2026. HPWHs qualify alongside heat pumps, insulation, solar, and other efficiency improvements.
The Section 25C energy efficiency tax credit expired December 31, 2025. There is no federal tax credit for heat pump water heaters in 2026. Many websites still reference the old $2,000 credit -- it no longer exists.
The Energize CT $750 rebate is your primary incentive in 2026. For income-eligible households, the HES-IE program provides full coverage at no cost.

NuWatt provides heat pump water heater installation throughout Connecticut. Our licensed plumbers handle the complete project -- 240V electrical connection, condensate drain, water line connections, and old unit removal -- as a single coordinated installation. No need to schedule separate electrician and plumber visits.
It depends — for a standalone HPWH installation, an HES assessment may not be required. However, if you are combining the HPWH with insulation or other measures, HES is required. Call 877-947-3873 to confirm for your specific situation.
A HPWH extracts heat from surrounding air. In summer, this provides free dehumidification — a real bonus in CT basements. In winter, it may lower basement temperature by 2-5°F. In a typical CT basement (55-65°F in winter), this is manageable. In a conditioned space, factor in slightly higher heating costs.
Yes. Get the $750 Energize CT rebate first, then finance the remaining cost with a 0.99% APR Smart-E Loan. For example: $2,500 total cost minus $750 rebate = $1,750 financed at 0.99% APR for 10 years = ~$15/month.
General rule: 50 gallons for 1-2 people, 65 gallons for 2-3 people, 80 gallons for 3+ people. HPWHs heat more slowly than gas, so sizing up is recommended. When in doubt, choose 80 gallons.
No. The Section 25C energy efficiency tax credit expired December 31, 2025. There is no federal tax credit for heat pump water heaters in 2026. The Energize CT $750 rebate is your primary incentive.
Typically 4-6 hours for a straightforward replacement. If electrical panel work is needed (adding a 240V circuit), allow an additional 2-4 hours and $200-500 for the electrician.
A heat pump water heater cuts your water heating costs by 60-70%. With the $750 Energize CT rebate and 0.99% Smart-E Loan, the upgrade pays for itself in under 4 years. Income-eligible households through HES-IE pay nothing.
Energize CT $750 rebate processing included. Licensed CT plumber. All qualifying HPWH brands available.
