Heat Pump Water Heater Rebates Through NJCEP

NJCEP offers a $500 base rebate for qualifying ENERGY STAR heat pump water heaters with UEF 2.0 or higher. PSE&G customers receive an additional $200 adder for a total of $700. HPWHs use 60-70% less electricity than standard electric resistance tanks.
Updated February 2026

All NJ utilities participate in the base $500 NJCEP rebate. PSE&G adds an additional $200. Minimum UEF 2.0 required.
PSE&G adds $200 to NJCEP base rebate
NJCEP base rebate only — no additional JCP&L adder
NJCEP base rebate only — no additional ACE adder
NJCEP base rebate only — no additional RECO adder
All models below meet the minimum UEF 2.0 requirement. Prices are equipment only -- installation is separate.
Best overall — highest efficiency, smart home integration
Most widely available — strong plumber familiarity in NJ
Budget-conscious with solid reliability
Premium quality — quietest option, ideal for finished basements
At NJ's ~$0.26/kWh electric rate, HPWH savings depend heavily on what you are replacing.
HPWH uses 60-70% less electricity than standard electric tank. Strong savings at NJ electric rates ($0.26/kWh).
Modest savings — NJ gas rates are relatively low. Best reason to switch: replacing a failing gas unit or going all-electric.
Eliminates oil-fired water heating. No more fuel deliveries for hot water.
Honest take: NJ is a gas-dominant market. HPWH savings vs gas are modest because NJ gas rates are relatively low. The strongest case for a HPWH is replacing an electric resistance tank (clear win), an end-of-life gas unit (avoid a new gas install), or going all-electric as part of a broader electrification plan.
Before and after NJCEP rebates
Income-eligible: Income-eligible households may receive HPWH through Comfort Partners at no cost
HPWHs have specific space and electrical requirements. Most NJ basements and utility rooms qualify.
Same as electric dryer. Most NJ homes have capacity, but panel space must be verified by electrician.
Standard basement, garage, or utility room. Cannot be in a small closet — needs air circulation for heat extraction.
HPWH produces condensation — needs floor drain nearby or condensate pump (adds $100-200).
HPWH extracts heat from surrounding air. Produces cool, dehumidified air — bonus in NJ humid summers, minor effect in winter.
Most models run 45-55 dB (dishwasher level). Stiebel Eltron is quietest at 37 dB. Locate away from bedrooms.
Standard 3/4" connections — same as existing water heater in most cases.
For a standalone HPWH installation, an HPwES assessment is typically not required. The HPWH rebate is available through the WaterSense/ENERGY STAR pathway. However, if you are combining the HPWH with insulation rebates, the HPwES assessment is required. Call 866-657-6278 to confirm for your situation.
Yes. PSE&G adds $200 to the base $500 NJCEP rebate for a total of $700 off a qualifying HPWH. JCP&L, ACE, and RECO customers receive the $500 NJCEP base rebate.
A HPWH extracts heat from surrounding air. In summer, this provides free dehumidification — a real bonus in NJ humid basements. In winter, it may lower basement temperature by 2-5F. In a typical NJ basement (55-65F in winter), this is manageable.
General rule: 50 gallons for 1-2 people, 65 gallons for 2-3 people, 80 gallons for 3+ people. HPWHs heat more slowly than gas, so sizing up is recommended. When in doubt, choose 80 gallons.
No. The Section 25C energy efficiency tax credit expired December 31, 2025. There is no federal tax credit for heat pump water heaters in 2026. The NJCEP $500 rebate (plus utility adders) is your primary incentive.
Typically 4-6 hours for a straightforward replacement. If electrical panel work is needed (adding a 240V circuit), allow an additional 2-4 hours and $200-500 for the electrician.
NJ does not have a state-subsidized low-interest loan like CT Smart-E. Options include utility on-bill financing (where available), home equity loans, or personal loans. Some HPWH installers offer their own financing.
