Dallas-Fort Worth heat pumps cost an average of $8,250 for a 3-ton system in 2026 ($5,500-$11,000 range). Oncor offers up to $600 in rebates. DFW has the widest temperature swing in Texas (20F to 100F), making dual-fuel systems particularly popular. This is the largest metro market for ducted central heat pumps in the state.

2026 Update: The federal 25C heat pump tax credit expired December 31, 2025. DFW homeowners rely on the Oncor rebate (up to $600) as the primary incentive. Dual-fuel systems remain popular after Winter Storm Uri.

Oncor Electric Delivery is the largest delivery utility in Texas, serving approximately 10 million people across the DFW metroplex, Waco, Midland-Odessa, Tyler, and Wichita Falls. Their Take a Load Off Texas program provides heat pump rebates.
Rebates vary by season and funding availability. Check takealoadofftexas.com for current amounts.
Oncor is the delivery utility — they own the poles and wires across DFW. Your REP (Retail Electric Provider) is the company you pay for electricity (TXU Energy, Reliant, Green Mountain, etc.). The Oncor rebate comes from the delivery utility, not your REP. You are eligible regardless of which REP you use. DFW electric rates average $0.14/kWh but can range from $0.09-$0.18/kWh depending on your REP plan.
DFW has the widest temperature swing in Texas — summer highs near 100F and winter lows near 20F (occasionally lower). This makes dual-fuel systems popular. But all-electric heat pumps can also handle DFW winters. Here is an honest comparison.
Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 changed the HVAC conversation in DFW. With temperatures dropping to single digits for multiple days, DFW homeowners experienced what happens when standard heat pumps face extreme cold.
DFW has the widest temperature swing in Texas. Summer design temperature is 100F. Winter design temperature is 20F, but occasional cold fronts push below 10F. The 80-degree swing means your HVAC system must perform well in both extremes — a challenge that makes DFW a more complex market than Houston or San Antonio.
Since Uri, DFW contractors increasingly recommend either dual-fuel systems (gas furnace backup below 30-35F) or cold-climate rated heat pumps (rated to 0-5F). The choice depends on whether you have an existing gas line, your comfort preferences, and your budget. Both approaches provide reliable heating through DFW winters.
While Houston focuses on SEER2 (cooling efficiency), DFW homeowners should also consider HSPF2 (heating efficiency). An HSPF2 of 10+ indicates strong cold-weather performance. Standard units at HSPF2 8.5 work fine most of the winter but lose efficiency faster when temperatures drop below freezing.
Despite the cold weather concern, DFW is still a cooling-dominant market. Approximately 70% of annual HVAC energy use goes to cooling, 30% to heating. SEER2 remains the more impactful rating for total annual energy costs. But unlike Houston, DFW buyers should not ignore HSPF2 entirely.
DFW needs units that handle both extreme summer heat and occasional winter cold. Lennox HQ is in Richardson (DFW metro), giving local buyers an edge on parts and support.

Lennox HQ is in Richardson, TX (DFW metro). Strong local support and parts availability. Variable-capacity compressor. Excellent both in DFW summer heat and winter cold.
Lennox International is headquartered in Richardson, Texas — right in the heart of the DFW metro. This means DFW homeowners benefit from the strongest Lennox dealer network in the country, fast parts availability, and robust local technical support. Many DFW HVAC contractors have direct relationships with Lennox and can offer competitive pricing on the XP25 and other Lennox heat pump models.
The federal Section 25C energy efficiency tax credit expired December 31, 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. There is no federal tax credit for residential heat pump purchases in 2026. Texas has no state income tax, so state tax credits are not possible. Any DFW contractor claiming a $2,000 federal credit is providing outdated information.
