NuWatt designs, installs, and manages solar, battery, heat pump, and EV charger systems across 9 states. One company, one warranty, one point of contact.
Get a Free QuoteMass Save is a program. NuWatt is a Mass Save participating contractor. We do not compete with Mass Save — we use Mass Save rebates for you.
If someone told you “Mass Save gave me a quote,” a contractor gave them a quote and Mass Save provided the rebate. NuWatt does the same thing — plus solar, batteries, and EV chargers that Mass Save does not cover.
The Program
Mass Save is a collaborative of Massachusetts utilities (Eversource, National Grid, Unitil, Cape Light Compact, Berkshire Gas, Liberty) that funds energy efficiency programs with ratepayer dollars.
The Installer (Mass Save Participating)
NuWatt Energy is a Massachusetts-based energy company and Mass Save participating contractor. We install the equipment and apply Mass Save rebates on your behalf.
Think of it like this:
Mass Save is like MassHealth (the insurance). NuWatt is like your doctor (the provider). MassHealth does not perform surgery — your doctor does. MassHealth pays for it. Similarly, Mass Save does not install heat pumps — NuWatt does. Mass Save provides the rebate.
A 12-factor comparison showing what each entity does and does not do.
These are the most common misunderstandings we hear from Massachusetts homeowners about Mass Save and how it relates to contractors like NuWatt.
"Mass Save gave me a quote"
Mass Save does not give quotes. A Mass Save participating contractor gave you a quote. Mass Save is the program that funds the rebate — the contractor is a separate company that does the actual work.
"Mass Save installed my heat pump"
A contractor installed your heat pump. Mass Save provided the rebate money. The utility (Eversource, National Grid) funded the rebate through Mass Save. The physical installation was done by a participating contractor.
"I can only use the contractor Mass Save assigns me"
You can choose ANY Mass Save participating contractor. You are not required to use the contractor that performed your home energy assessment. Get multiple quotes from different participating contractors, including NuWatt.
"Mass Save is free"
The home energy assessment is free. The rebates reduce your cost but do not make it free (unless you qualify for income-eligible programs covering up to 100%). You pay the contractor for equipment and labor minus the rebate amount.
"If I go with NuWatt, I lose my Mass Save rebates"
NuWatt IS a Mass Save participating contractor. You get the exact same Mass Save rebates whether you go through NuWatt or any other participating contractor. The rebate comes from the program, not the contractor.
"Mass Save only does insulation, not heat pumps"
Mass Save covers insulation, air sealing, heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, smart thermostats, and more. Heat pump rebates of up to $8,500 standard are among the largest incentives in the program. Mass Save does NOT cover solar panels.
Mass Save is excellent — every Massachusetts homeowner should use it. NuWatt adds capabilities that Mass Save alone cannot provide.
Mass Save covers heat pumps but NOT solar or batteries. NuWatt designs and installs all three as an integrated system. One contractor, one project, one warranty. We apply Mass Save rebates for the heat pump and SMART enrollment for the solar — you get every available incentive.
Mass Save home energy assessments typically have a 4-8 week wait. NuWatt can schedule your assessment within 1-2 weeks. We are a Mass Save participating contractor and can conduct the HEA (Home Energy Assessment) ourselves.
NuWatt assigns a dedicated project manager to your installation. We handle permits, utility interconnection, Mass Save rebate paperwork, SMART enrollment, ConnectedSolutions enrollment, and final inspection. One point of contact for everything.
Some Mass Save contractors install only one brand. NuWatt installs Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin, LG, and Carrier heat pumps — plus Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ Battery, and Franklin aPower2 batteries. We recommend the best equipment for your specific home, not the equipment we have in stock.
If you add a battery, NuWatt handles ConnectedSolutions enrollment — earning you $687-$812/year in demand response income. Most Mass Save-only contractors do not handle battery installations or ConnectedSolutions enrollment because Mass Save does not cover batteries.
NuWatt is a local Massachusetts company. We handle warranty claims, system monitoring, and equipment questions directly. If your Mass Save contractor goes out of business (which happens), you may struggle to get warranty service. NuWatt has been serving Massachusetts homeowners since 2020.
Here are example project costs showing how Mass Save rebates reduce your out-of-pocket cost when working with NuWatt.
Same rebate whether through NuWatt or any other Mass Save contractor
$10,000 HP rebate + up to $3,500 insulation rebate
Mass Save covers HP only. Solar via NuWatt pricing. Battery earns ConnectedSolutions $747/yr.
Income-eligible households (up to 80% AMI) may qualify for 100% coverage
Tell us what you are interested in: heat pump, solar, battery, or all three. We will schedule a home visit within 1-2 weeks.
As a Mass Save participating contractor, we perform the HEA at no cost. We evaluate insulation, air sealing, and HVAC needs.
We show you the total cost, the Mass Save rebate amount, and your net out-of-pocket cost. No surprises.
We install the equipment, apply Mass Save rebates, handle permits, enroll you in SMART and ConnectedSolutions if applicable, and complete final inspection.
Lower energy bills, Mass Save rebate applied, and if you went solar, SMART payments start. NuWatt remains your point of contact for warranty and support.
The Mass Save HEAT Loan offers 0% APR financing for up to 7 years, up to $50,000, for qualifying energy efficiency projects. NuWatt can help you apply as part of your project.
The HEAT Loan covers heat pumps, insulation, and other Mass Save-qualifying improvements. It does NOT cover solar panels. For solar financing, NuWatt offers separate loan options at competitive rates. Many homeowners combine a HEAT Loan for the heat pump with a solar loan for the panels.
Is Mass Save the same as NuWatt?
No. Mass Save is a statewide energy efficiency program funded by Massachusetts utilities (Eversource, National Grid, Unitil, Cape Light Compact, etc.). It provides rebates and incentives for energy efficiency upgrades. NuWatt Energy is a Mass Save participating contractor — a company that actually installs the equipment (heat pumps, insulation, etc.) and applies Mass Save rebates on your behalf. Think of Mass Save as the program/fund and NuWatt as the installer who does the work.
Do I get the same Mass Save rebates with NuWatt?
Yes, exactly the same. Mass Save rebates are determined by the program, not the contractor. Whether you use NuWatt or any other Mass Save participating contractor, you receive the same rebate amounts: up to $8,500 for whole-home heat pump conversions, up to $3,500 for insulation, etc. The rebate is funded by your utility through the Mass Save program regardless of which participating contractor you choose.
Why would I choose NuWatt instead of the contractor Mass Save assigns?
Several reasons: (1) NuWatt installs solar, batteries, AND heat pumps — most Mass Save contractors only do HVAC. (2) NuWatt offers multiple equipment brands while some contractors stock only one. (3) NuWatt handles ConnectedSolutions enrollment for battery owners ($687-$812/yr income). (4) Faster scheduling — NuWatt typically schedules assessments within 1-2 weeks vs 4-8 weeks through Mass Save. (5) You are never required to use the contractor Mass Save assigns. You can choose any participating contractor.
Does Mass Save install solar panels?
No. Mass Save does not cover solar panel installation. Mass Save focuses on energy efficiency: heat pumps, insulation, air sealing, heat pump water heaters, smart thermostats, and lighting. Solar panels are incentivized separately through the SMART program and net metering. NuWatt installs both solar panels (with SMART enrollment) and Mass Save-covered heat pumps, giving you access to all available Massachusetts incentives through one contractor.
Can I get multiple quotes from different Mass Save contractors?
Yes, absolutely. Mass Save does not require you to use a specific contractor. You can and should get 2-3 quotes from different Mass Save participating contractors. Compare equipment brands, pricing, warranties, and customer reviews. All participating contractors apply the same Mass Save rebates. NuWatt provides free, no-obligation quotes for heat pumps, solar, batteries, and EV chargers.
What does Mass Save actually do?
Mass Save administers energy efficiency programs funded by Massachusetts utilities. Specifically, Mass Save: (1) funds free home energy assessments, (2) provides rebates for heat pumps (up to $8,500 standard in 2026), insulation, air sealing, and other efficiency upgrades, (3) offers the Mass Save HEAT Loan (0% APR, up to $25,000), (4) manages income-eligible programs covering up to 100% of costs, and (5) coordinates with participating contractors who do the actual installation work. Mass Save does not install anything itself.
Is NuWatt a Mass Save approved contractor?
Yes. NuWatt Energy participates in the Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network (HPIN) for heat pump projects. We can help you choose eligible equipment, coordinate the required Mass Save steps, complete the heat pump installation, and handle rebate paperwork so your quote reflects the correct net project cost.
NuWatt is your one-stop shop for heat pumps, solar, batteries, and EV chargers in Massachusetts. We apply all available Mass Save rebates, handle SMART enrollment, and manage ConnectedSolutions. Same rebates. Better service. More options.
