Get a Free QuoteHeat pump handles your heating when it is efficient. Oil or propane furnace kicks in automatically below the balance point. Save 50-70% on fuel bills. NHSaves rebates apply. Keep your existing furnace as insurance.

A dual fuel heat pump system pairs a cold-climate heat pump (primary) with your existing oil or propane furnace (backup below ~15°F). The heat pump handles 80-90% of annual heating BTUs at 2-3x the efficiency of combustion. The furnace fires only during the coldest days — reducing your annual fuel consumption by 75-85%. Total annual savings: typically $1,200-$1,600 for a medium NH home versus oil-only or propane-only heating.

Typical 2,000 sq ft NH home (750 gallons oil-equivalent annual heating load). Oil at $3.50/gal, propane at $3.00/gal, electricity at $0.27/kWh. Heat pump COP 3.0 average.

Medium NH home 2,000 sq ft. Oil $3.50/gal, propane $3.00/gal (NH EIA March 2026). Electricity $0.27/kWh. Dual fuel assumes HP handles 80% of BTUs; furnace handles remaining 20% below 15°F balance point.
The balance point is the outdoor temperature below which your furnace is more cost-effective than the heat pump. The right balance point depends on your fuel prices, electricity rate, and heat pump performance.
Mild NH winters, good insulation, propane backup
HP handles 90%+ of BTUs | Backup rarely runs
Most NH homes — good balance point for 2-stage HP
HP handles 85-90% of BTUs | Backup runs ~5% of hours
Older homes, less efficient HP, comfort preference
HP handles 75-80% of BTUs | Backup runs ~10% of hours
Aggressive backup preference, high oil price protection
HP handles 65-70% of BTUs | Backup runs ~15-20% of hours
Manchester, NH averages approximately:
HP is cost-effective for ~88% of annual hours. Furnace covers the coldest 12%.
Adding a heat pump to your existing oil or propane system is significantly cheaper than a full heating system replacement. Here is what to expect.
Cold-climate heat pump (2-3 ton, installed)
Includes air handler or ductwork connection
Balance point controls / thermostat
Integrated thermostat for dual fuel management
Electrical service upgrade (if needed)
Only if panel capacity is insufficient
NHSaves rebate (2-3 ton × $250)
Deducted from total
Federal 25C credit (EXPIRED)
Expired December 31, 2025
Net cost — add-on to existing furnace
Vs $12,000-$20,000 full replacement
Add-on vs. replacement: A dual fuel add-on costs $7,700-$15,850 net after rebates (for a 2-3 ton system). A full cold-climate HP replacement (removing the furnace entirely) typically costs $12,000-$20,000. If your furnace is newer and in good condition, dual fuel is the smart financial choice. If the furnace is 15+ years old, full replacement may be better.
The thermostat is the brain of your dual fuel system. It must be capable of balance point programming and automatic fuel switching.

You already have a working oil or propane furnace
Adding a heat pump costs $8K-$14K vs $12K-$20K for a full HP replacement system. Your existing furnace is the backup — you don't pay for it twice.
Your home has existing ductwork
Dual fuel requires a ducted heat pump that connects to existing ducts. If you already have ducts, this is the cleanest, fastest installation path.
You want backup heat without a wood stove
Not everyone wants to manage firewood. Dual fuel gives you automatic backup heat — the thermostat switches fuels without any user action required.
Oil price volatility makes you nervous
With dual fuel, you use oil only 10-20% of the time. Your exposure to oil price spikes drops by 80-90%. You keep the furnace for extreme cold without being dependent on oil.
No existing ductwork
Ductless mini-split systems are the right choice. Dual fuel requires ducts. Full HP replacement makes more sense for duct-free homes.
Oil furnace is nearing end of life
If the furnace is 15+ years old and will need replacement soon anyway, a full cold-climate HP system avoids paying for two installations.
You want maximum savings and don't mind higher upfront cost
A full cold-climate HP system eliminates fuel bills almost entirely. Payback is 7-12 years vs 5-9 years for dual fuel, but long-term savings are higher.
You live in southern NH with milder winters
Below-balance-point hours are fewer in southern NH. A properly sized cold-climate HP can often handle 100% of the load without any fossil backup.
Good news: NHSaves rebates apply to dual fuel heat pump installations just as they do for full heat pump systems. The rebate is for the qualifying heat pump — not conditioned on removing your furnace.
Maximum $1,250 for a 5-ton qualifying cold-climate heat pump. Available through Eversource, Liberty, Unitil, NHEC.
Section 25C (heat pumps): Expired Dec 31, 2025. Zero available in 2026.
NHSaves utility rebates are the only incentive available to NH homeowners for heat pump installations in 2026.
