Northeast homeowners are spending $2,500–$4,000+ per year on heating oil. A cold-climate heat pump cuts that to $800–$1,200 — and it cools your home in summer too. Here's how to make the switch.
At $4.00–$4.20 per gallon in the Northeast, oil heat costs 3–4x more per BTU than a heat pump running on electricity. Oil prices are tied to global markets you can't control. Heat pump costs are tied to your local electric rate — which you can offset with solar panels.

StableHeat pump costs assume Northeast electric rates ($0.25–$0.33/kWh) and cold-climate heat pump COP of 2.0–2.5 average. With solar panels, heat pump operating costs drop to near zero.
Modern cold-climate heat pumps (ccASHP) use inverter-driven compressors and enhanced vapor injection to produce heat down to -13°F to -15°F. They are not the same as standard heat pumps.
Heat pumps move heat rather than creating it. For every 1 kWh of electricity, they deliver 2.5–4 kWh of heat. Even at 5°F, a good cold-climate unit delivers 2x the heat per dollar compared to oil.
A heat pump replaces both your furnace/boiler AND your air conditioner. One system, year-round. No more window units or separate AC installation.
We assess your insulation, ductwork (if any), heating load, and electrical panel capacity. Many states offer free or subsidized assessments through utility programs.
We size the heat pump for your actual heating load and climate zone. Ducted systems use existing ductwork; ductless mini-splits are installed zone by zone. We also plan for panel upgrades if needed.
We apply for all available rebates before installation. Mass Save, Clean Heat RI, and similar programs require pre-approval. HEAR income-qualification is also handled before work begins.
Outdoor unit and indoor air handlers are installed. If ductless, minimal disruption — small holes for refrigerant lines, no ductwork. Your existing heating stays online until the heat pump is tested.
We set up dual-fuel controls so the heat pump runs as primary and your oil boiler kicks in only during the coldest hours (if desired). Most homeowners decommission the boiler within 1–2 winters.
State rebate programs plus income-qualified HEAR rebates (up to $8,000 additional). The federal 25C tax credit for heat pumps expired December 31, 2025.

A heat pump shifts your heating from oil to electricity — but you're still paying for that electricity. Adding solar panels means your heat pump runs on free energy from your roof. The combination eliminates both your oil bill AND your electric bill.
