Quick Answer
Generac PWRcell: 18 kWh NMC battery with 9 kW continuous / 11 kW peak output. NuWatt does not install this battery. Generac's battery entry is aimed at existing Generac generator owners. NMC chemistry (less safe than LFP), 2022-23 field reliability issues, and the 10-year warranty limit our confidence. NuWatt installs Franklin aPower 2 for the same whole-home-backup use case with LFP chemistry and a 15-year warranty.

How we calculated this
This tool is honest by design: for homes with high annual outage hours, the right generator can beat a small battery on dollars alone. Decide what you’re optimizing for — up-front cost, lifetime cost, silence, emissions, or never hearing a pull-cord again.
Brand stability
Generac Holdings (NYSE: GNRC) is the dominant US home standby generator manufacturer. PWRcell is their battery entry and has had mixed field reviews — 2022-23 recalls around software and firmware. Financially stable parent but battery product reliability is a valid concern.

No. NuWatt does not currently install the Generac PWRcell. For the same use case, we install the FranklinWH aPower 2 — see the "NuWatt's recommendation" section above for a detailed comparison.
The Generac PWRcell has 18 kWh of nameplate capacity and 16.2 kWh of usable capacity — the difference (1.8 kWh) is reserved for battery health and cannot be accessed during normal operation. Use the interactive outage simulator on this page to see exactly how long that capacity will run your specific appliances.
The Generac PWRcell uses NMC chemistry. NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) offers higher energy density per kilogram than LFP but has lower safety margins and shorter cycle life. NuWatt generally prefers LFP for residential installations due to the safety advantages over a 15+ year ownership horizon.
10-year product warranty with a 4,000-cycle guarantee (whichever comes first). Generac's warranty is backed by a financially stable parent company with a mature US warranty-service infrastructure.
Yes. Residential home batteries remain eligible for the 30% federal Investment Tax Credit in 2026 when paired with solar (Section 48E) or installed standalone under the IRA provisions. This is different from the residential solar panel credit (Section 25D) which expired December 31, 2025. For commercial ITC projects, see the FEOC section on this page for domestic-content-adder eligibility.
