Get a Free QuoteAt 18¢/kWh, every kilowatt-hour your solar system produces instead of buying from the grid saves you real money. Calculate exactly how much solar covers your EV — sized for New Jersey's sun and your driving habits.

New Jersey's TREC (Transition Renewable Energy Certificate) program pays solar owners for each megawatt-hour generated, providing a revenue stream on top of electricity bill savings. PSE&G runs several EV infrastructure programs and JCP&L offers rebates for smart charger installation. NJ's 4.5 peak sun hours — the best in NuWatt's Northeast territory — make solar production competitive. For EV charging, the combination of TREC income plus avoided $0.18/kWh grid electricity creates a dual-revenue case for solar. A properly sized system in New Jersey often achieves payback in 6–8 years including TREC income.

Transition Renewable Energy Certificates (TRECs) are New Jersey state solar renewable energy credits. Solar system owners earn one TREC per megawatt-hour (1,000 kWh) generated. TRECs are purchased by electric utilities at a fixed price set by the BPU, currently in the range of $90–$100 per TREC. For a 5 kW system producing ~6 MWh/year, TRECs add roughly $540–$600/year in income on top of electricity savings.
PSE&G has the most active EV infrastructure program in New Jersey, including rebates on smart charger installation and a demand response program for enrolled EV households. JCP&L and ACE (Atlantic City Electric) also offer rebates and rate options for EV customers. NuWatt works across all major NJ utility territories and will identify the specific programs available at your address.
The calculator uses real state peak sun hours, current utility rate data, and manufacturer-standard vehicle efficiency figures. System derate factor is 0.80 (NREL standard for real-world losses). Estimates are within ±15% of a precise NuWatt design, which factors in your actual roof orientation, shading, and local utility interconnection rules. Yes — and it is often the most cost-effective approach. NuWatt coordinates solar system design, panel installation, EV charger wiring, and permit filing as a single project. Combining the work reduces labor costs, requires only one set of permits and utility paperwork, and lets us right-size the electrical panel upgrade to handle both loads simultaneously.
