A quality installation starts with choosing the right company. Your 25-year investment depends on it.
Use these 10 criteria to evaluate every installer you talk to. They are listed in order of importance, though all 10 matter for a complete evaluation.
Massachusetts requires specific licenses for solar installation. The installing company must hold a Construction Supervisor License (CSL) from the Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations and Standards. The person performing electrical work must be a licensed Journeyman Electrician or Master Electrician through the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians. Some companies hold both licenses in-house; others subcontract the electrical work to a licensed electrician.
Verify licenses at mass.gov. Ask for the CSL number and the electrician license number. Also confirm general liability insurance ($1M minimum), workers compensation insurance, and whether they carry an umbrella policy. If a worker is injured on your property and the installer lacks proper insurance, you could be liable.

Experience matters for two reasons: installation quality and business longevity. A company with hundreds of installations has seen every roof type, shading scenario, and permitting challenge. They have established relationships with utility interconnection teams and local building inspectors. They have also survived market cycles, which matters because your warranty is only as good as the company behind it.
Check Google reviews (sort by newest to spot recent trends), Yelp reviews, the BBB profile (look at complaint count and resolution, not just the letter grade), and the Massachusetts Attorney General consumer complaint database. A handful of negative reviews is normal for a busy company — look for patterns, not individual complaints.

Not all installers offer all financing options. Cash purchase gives you the best long-term ROI. Solar loans (through Mass Solar Loan program, HEAT loan, or installer-arranged lenders) let you own the system with monthly payments. Lease/PPA options (Sunrun, Palmetto LightReach) mean $0 down with no ownership. Propel financing (available through NuWatt, New England Clean Energy, and others) offers transitional ownership using the Section 48E commercial ITC to lower costs.
Ask for a written comparison showing total cost of ownership under each financing option they offer. A good installer should be able to show you the 25-year economics for cash, loan, and any third-party financing they offer. Be cautious of installers who only push one financing option — they may have a financial incentive that does not align with your best interest.
"What financing options do you offer? Can you show me a 25-year cost comparison for cash purchase vs your recommended financing? Are there any dealer fees built into the loan rate?"
Solar equipment has three tiers. Budget panels ($0.30-$0.40/W, shorter warranties, higher degradation rates) are generally not worth the savings. Mid-tier panels ($0.40-$0.55/W, 25-year warranty, 0.5% annual degradation, Tier 1 brands like Canadian Solar, Q.CELLS, Hyundai) offer the best value. Premium panels ($0.55-$0.70/W, 25-30 year warranty, 0.25-0.4% degradation, brands like Silfab, REC) offer the best long-term performance.
For inverters, the two industry standards are Enphase microinverters (IQ8+ or newer) and SolarEdge power optimizers. Microinverters provide panel-level optimization and monitoring, which is especially valuable for roofs with partial shading. String inverters are the cheapest option but provide no individual panel monitoring and one shaded panel reduces the entire string output. For batteries, top choices include Enphase IQ 10C, Tesla Powerwall 3, and Franklin aPower2.
"What specific panel brand and model do you install? What is the panel degradation rate warranty? Do you use microinverters or string inverters? What battery brands do you offer?"
You should receive four separate warranties: panel manufacturer warranty (25-30 years, covers defective panels), inverter warranty (12-25 years depending on brand), workmanship warranty from the installer (covers roof penetrations, wiring, mounting, racking — this is the critical one), and racking warranty (25 years from manufacturer). The workmanship warranty is the most important because it is the only one from YOUR installer.
Workmanship warranties range from 5 years (industry minimum — a red flag) to 25 years (best in class). The length alone does not tell the whole story: a 25-year workmanship warranty from a 3-year-old company is less reassuring than a 15-year warranty from a 10-year-old company. Ask what happens to the warranty if the company is sold, acquired, or goes out of business. Some companies back their warranties with third-party insurance.

Some solar companies are sales organizations that subcontract the actual installation to third-party crews. Others use their own W-2 employees for everything from design to installation to interconnection. Both models can produce quality work, but accountability is different. With in-house crews, one company is responsible for everything. With subcontractors, the sales company and the installation crew may point fingers at each other if something goes wrong.
Neither model is inherently better or worse. What matters is: who is responsible if there is a roof leak two years after installation? Who comes back for warranty work? If the answer is the same company you signed the contract with, that is good. If the answer is "the subcontractor who did the work," dig deeper into how that relationship is managed and what happens if the subcontractor is no longer available.
"Do you use your own W-2 crews or subcontractors for installation? Who is responsible for warranty work — your company or the installation crew? Who does the electrical work?"
Solar installation requires multiple permits and approvals: municipal building permit, electrical permit, fire department sign-off (rapid shutdown compliance), utility interconnection application, and potentially historic commission review. In Boston proper, permitting takes 2-3 weeks. Cambridge uses SolarApp+ for faster processing (1-2 weeks). Historic districts add 4-8 weeks. Utility interconnection (Eversource or National Grid) adds another 2-6 weeks after installation.
A good installer handles every piece of paperwork from start to finish. They should file the building permit, electrical permit, fire department application, utility interconnection application, net metering enrollment, SMART Statement of Qualification, and ConnectedSolutions registration (if battery). The relationship with your installer does not end at installation. Over 25 years, you may need: monitoring support (understanding production data), troubleshooting (why did production drop?), warranty claims (panel replacement, inverter swap), roof work coordination (if you re-roof, panels need temporary removal and reinstallation), and system expansion (adding panels or batteries later).
Local companies often provide faster post-installation support than national companies. A company with an office in Greater Boston can typically respond to service calls within days, not weeks. Ask how they handle service requests: is there a dedicated support line? What is the typical response time? Do they charge for service calls under warranty? Understanding their post-installation process before you sign tells you a lot about how they will treat you after the sale.

Get quotes from at least three different installers. Include at least one local company and one national company to see the range. Certain behaviors should immediately disqualify an installer from your consideration. These are not matters of preference or style — they indicate either incompetence or dishonesty. Walking away from a red-flag installer is always the right decision, even if their price seems attractive.
The solar industry has matured significantly, but door-to-door sales operations and high-pressure tactics persist. Legitimate solar companies do not need to pressure you — the economics speak for themselves. If an installer makes you feel rushed, that is a feature of their sales process, not a reflection of market conditions.
"No need to ask — just walk away if you see any of the red flags listed below."
Any one of these should give you serious pause. Two or more means move on to another installer.
The 25D residential ITC expired December 31, 2025. Any installer citing a 30% federal tax credit for a residential purchase in 2026 is either uninformed or deliberately misleading you. The Section 48E commercial ITC still exists for lease/PPA/Propel structures, but that is different from a residential purchase credit.
Knocking on your door and pressuring you to sign before they leave is a sales tactic, not a market condition. Legitimate companies have waitlists because their work speaks for itself. If someone says "this offer expires today" or "we only have two slots left this month," that is manufactured urgency.
No responsible installer can provide an accurate quote without assessing your roof, electrical panel, shading, and access. If someone asks you to sign based solely on satellite imagery and a phone call, they will either surprise you with change orders later or cut corners during installation.
Solar panels are not free. What "free" usually means is a lease or PPA where the company owns the panels and you pay them for the electricity. This is a legitimate financing model, but calling it "free" is misleading. Understanding ownership and what you are actually paying for is critical.
Any installer with a track record should be happy to connect you with previous customers. If they refuse or say "we don't do that for privacy reasons," they are likely hiding something. Ask for 5+ references in your area and actually call them.
NABCEP certification is not legally required in Massachusetts, but it is the gold standard for solar installation professionals. A company that has invested in NABCEP certification demonstrates a commitment to quality that goes beyond the minimum. Ask for the certification number and verify at nabcep.org.
Verbal warranty promises are meaningless. Get every warranty term in writing before signing a contract: workmanship warranty length and coverage, what happens if the company is sold or closes, and exactly what is and is not covered. If they will not put it in writing, the warranty does not exist.
A professional quote includes cost per watt, specific equipment model numbers, production estimates, warranty terms, and a project timeline. If you receive a quote that says "10 kW system — $32,000" with no supporting detail, that is not a quote — it is a number on a page. Insist on specifics.

Use this checklist for every installer you evaluate. Print it out or save it to your phone. An installer who checks all 20 boxes is worth serious consideration. Missing more than 3-4 items should raise concerns.
Scoring: 18-20 checks = excellent candidate. 14-17 = good with some gaps to address. 10-13 = concerning — ask about missing items. Below 10 = look elsewhere.

The SMART program adds $0.03/kWh for 20 years to your system value. Not every installer enrolls customers in SMART — some skip it because the paperwork takes effort. Your installer should handle the Statement of Qualification, enrollment, and tariff assignment as a standard part of every project. Ask: "How many SMART enrollments have you completed this year?" If the answer is vague, they may not do it routinely.
If you are adding a battery, your installer should register it with Eversource or National Grid ConnectedSolutions. This earns $225-$275/kW per year in demand response revenue. Some installers install the battery but leave ConnectedSolutions enrollment to you — which means months of lost revenue while you figure out the paperwork.
Eversource and National Grid have different interconnection processes, timelines, and requirements. An experienced Boston-area installer has established relationships with utility interconnection teams and knows the specific requirements for each territory. Municipal light plants (Wellesley, Braintree, Marblehead) have entirely different processes.
Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Bay Village, Mission Hill, South End (parts), Charlestown, and other areas require Boston Landmarks Commission review. Cambridge has its own Historical Commission. Your installer should know which areas require review, what passes aesthetic requirements (typically all-black panels), and how to present to historic commissions.
