Get paid to charge your EV off-peak. Massachusetts utilities offer managed charging rebates, TOU rate savings, and multifamily incentives. Stack these with Mass Save rebates (up to $800) and MassCEC incentives. Note: the federal Section 30C home-charger credit expired June 30, 2026.
EV managed charging is a smart grid program where your utility can briefly adjust your charger's power draw during rare peak demand events (typically a few summer afternoons per year, 2-7 PM). In return, you earn rebates and bill credits. Your car still charges — it simply draws less power for a short period. Most participants never notice the difference because their car is fully charged before they need it.
Massachusetts has some of the most generous managed charging programs in the country. Both Eversource and National Grid offer residential programs, and MassCEC provides additional incentives for multifamily properties. Combined with TOU (time-of-use) rates and solar panels, managed charging can reduce your EV fueling costs to near zero.

Eversource's flagship demand response program now includes EV chargers. Enroll your smart charger and earn $50-$100 per summer season for allowing brief load reductions during peak events (typically 10-15 events from June-September). Your charger reduces power draw for 1-3 hours during these events, then resumes full speed. Compatible chargers include ChargePoint Home Flex, JuiceBox 48A, and Wallbox Pulsar Plus.
Eversource offers a residential TOU rate that makes overnight EV charging significantly cheaper. Off-peak hours (11 PM - 7 AM) offer rates $0.10-$0.15/kWh lower than on-peak. For a typical EV driving 12,000 miles/year, this translates to $300-$450 in annual savings compared to flat-rate charging. Enroll through your Eversource account online.
Eversource has expanded its EV infrastructure program beyond ConnectedSolutions. The pilot provides additional incentives of up to $300 for new smart charger installations that participate in at least two years of managed charging. This stacks with Mass Save rebates and MassCEC incentives.
National Grid's EV-specific TOU rate offers some of the lowest overnight charging costs in Massachusetts. Off-peak hours (9 PM - 1 PM next day) give you 16 hours of low-rate charging — the most generous off-peak window among MA utilities. On-peak hours are only 1 PM - 9 PM on weekdays. Weekend charging is entirely off-peak.
National Grid's managed charging program pays $50-$75 per year for smart charger enrollment. The program requires a Wi-Fi-connected Level 2 charger that supports demand response protocols. National Grid also participates in the statewide ConnectedSolutions program, allowing you to stack EV and battery demand response rebates.
For multifamily properties (5+ units), National Grid covers a portion of the electrical infrastructure costs (panel upgrades, conduit, wiring) through their make-ready program. This can reduce installation costs by $2,000-$5,000 per property — making the business case for landlords and HOAs much stronger.
If you have both a smart EV charger and a home battery (Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ, etc.), you can enroll both in ConnectedSolutions and earn separate rebates for each device. Battery rebates pay $225/kWh per summer season — a 10 kWh battery earns $2,250/year. Combined with EV managed charging rebates, you can earn $2,300-$2,400 annually from demand response programs alone.
Time-of-use rates are the single biggest way to reduce EV charging costs. Both Eversource and National Grid offer TOU plans that reward off-peak charging with significantly lower per-kWh rates.

National Grid's off-peak period runs a full 16 hours (9 PM - 1 PM), giving you overnight charging plus most of the morning. This is the most generous off-peak window among Massachusetts utilities — and weekend charging is entirely off-peak. If you're in National Grid territory, you can charge at the lowest rate nearly all the time.

Massachusetts recognizes that renters and condo owners face unique EV charging challenges. MassCEC (Massachusetts Clean Energy Center) offers substantial incentives specifically for multifamily properties with 5 or more units to install shared Level 2 charging stations.
Pairing solar panels with a smart EV charger is one of the highest-ROI home energy investments in Massachusetts. With net metering, your solar panels produce excess electricity during the day, which earns credits that offset your overnight EV charging at a 1:1 ratio. The result: near-zero fueling costs for your EV.
The Section 30C residential credit (30% of equipment and installation, up to $1,000 for a home) expired June 30, 2026 and is no longer available. It joined the solar ITC (Section 25D) and heat pump credit (Section 25C), which both expired December 31, 2025. Most Massachusetts homes built after 1990 with a 200A panel have enough electrical capacity for a Level 2 EV charger and solar. Older homes with 100A or 150A panels will typically need a panel upgrade.
