Warranty protection: Licensed electrician disconnect preserves your manufacturer panel and inverter warranties.
The residential solar ITC (Section 25D) expired on December 31, 2025. There is no federal tax credit available for solar panel removal, reinstallation, or roof replacement. Websites still showing a 30% credit are using outdated information.
The one exception: If you upgrade to a brand-new solar system (not R&R of existing panels), a Section 48 lease or PPA lets a third-party owner claim the 30% commercial ITC and pass savings to you. This requires construction beginning before July 4, 2026.
Not every reroof needs a solar upgrade. Here are the four scenarios where doing both at once saves you real money.
Asphalt shingle roofs last 20-25 years. If yours is aging, replacing before reinstalling panels avoids paying for R&R twice.
Older panels (pre-2012) produce 25-40% less than modern 440W modules. Upgrading while the roof is open saves $1K-3K in labor overlap.
Cracked flashing, lifted shingles around mounts, or daylight visible in the attic near penetrations signal its time to act.
If upgrading panels, a lease/PPA structure before July 4, 2026 lets a third-party owner claim the 30% commercial ITC — the only federal incentive still available.
NuWatt inspects your system, documents panel layout, and provides a firm R&R quote. We coordinate scheduling with your roofer.
A licensed electrician safely disconnects your solar system, performs lockout/tagout, and caps all conduit. Your utility meter is notified.
Panels are carefully removed, inspected for damage, labeled by position, and stored securely on-site or at our facility.
Your roofer completes the replacement with a clean, panel-free work area. No working around solar equipment.
Panels are reinstalled on the new roof with fresh flashing and mounts. Licensed electrician reconnects and verifies system output.
Final inspection, production verification, and full photo documentation for your warranty records and any insurance claims.
The right choice depends on your panels' age, condition, and production level.
