Oncor Take a Load Off Texas program offers up to $9,000 for combined solar + battery storage installations. $5,000 for solar panels + $4,000 for battery = $9,000 maximum. Battery required to qualify. DFW area and all Oncor territory. Apply within 90 days of installation.

2026 Alert: The federal residential solar tax credit (Section 25D) expired December 31, 2025. Homeowners who buy with cash or loan receive $0 in federal tax credits. The Oncor rebate (up to $9,000) is now the largest financial incentive available for DFW solar owners. Lease/PPA arrangements may still access the 30% commercial ITC through the third-party system owner.
The Oncor Take a Load Off Texas rebate has two components: solar and battery. Battery storage is required to qualify for the solar portion. Here is the breakdown.
Based on installed system size in watts DC. A typical 10 kW system qualifies for the full $5,000 cap. Systems smaller than 4 kW receive proportionally less.
Requirement: Must be installed at an Oncor-served residential premise. System must be interconnected to the Oncor grid.
Based on battery storage capacity in watts. A typical 13.5 kWh (5 kW continuous) battery qualifies for $2,500. Two Powerwall-class batteries (~10 kW) reach the $4,000 cap.
Requirement: Battery must be paired with a new or existing solar system. Standalone battery installations may qualify separately.
$5,000 solar + $4,000 battery = $9,000 maximum combined rebate. This is the largest utility-backed solar+battery incentive in Texas.
Requirement: Both solar and battery must be installed at the same Oncor-served address. Application within 90 days of installation.
The $9,000 Oncor rebate reduces the combined $34,500 system cost to $25,500. No federal 25D credit available (expired Dec 31, 2025). Add the 100% TX property tax exemption for additional savings of $8,000-$15,000 over 25 years.
You must meet all of the following requirements to qualify for the Oncor solar + battery rebate.
Must be in Oncor Electric Delivery service territory
Oncor serves approximately 10 million people across the DFW metroplex, Waco, Midland-Odessa, Tyler, and Wichita Falls. Check your utility bill — if Oncor is your delivery company (TDU), you qualify geographically.
Residential customers only
The Take a Load Off Texas rebate is for residential premises. Commercial solar has a separate program. Must be the account holder at the installation address.
Battery storage must be included for the solar rebate
Oncor requires battery storage to be paired with solar. This is a grid resilience requirement — Oncor wants battery capacity it can potentially dispatch during ERCOT grid emergencies. Solar-only installations do NOT qualify for this rebate.
Apply within 90 days of installation
The application must be submitted within 90 days of the installation completion date. Keep all receipts, permits, and interconnection paperwork. Retroactive applications for systems installed before the program launch do not qualify.
Licensed solar installer with NABCEP or equivalent certification preferred
Installation must meet Oncor interconnection standards. Using an Oncor-familiar installer ensures the interconnection paperwork is filed correctly and does not delay your rebate.
Minimum solar: 4 kW DC. Minimum battery: 5 kWh usable capacity
The rebate requires a meaningful solar + battery system. Very small systems (under 4 kW solar or under 5 kWh battery) do not qualify. There is no maximum system size, but the rebate caps at $5,000 for solar and $4,000 for battery.
Follow these six steps to claim your Oncor solar + battery rebate. The entire process from first quote to rebate receipt takes approximately 3-6 months.
Check your utility bill to confirm Oncor is your Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU). Your REP (Retail Electric Provider) is separate from Oncor. Even if you use TXU, Chariot, or Green Mountain as your REP, Oncor may still be your TDU.
Get 3-5 quotes from solar installers experienced with Oncor interconnection. Make sure quotes include battery storage — solar-only does not qualify. Ask about NABCEP certification and Oncor rebate experience.
Schedule installation with your chosen installer. Ensure the installer handles all Oncor interconnection paperwork and city/county permitting. Installation typically takes 1-3 days for residential systems.
Your installer files the interconnection application with Oncor. Oncor inspects the system (may take 2-4 weeks). Once approved, your system is permission-to-operate (PTO) and begins exporting to the grid.
Apply for the Take a Load Off Texas rebate within 90 days of installation completion. Submit through the Oncor online portal. Required documents: proof of installation, Oncor account number, inverter and battery specifications, installer certificate of completion.
Oncor processes the rebate application and issues payment. Rebate is typically paid as a check or bill credit within 8-12 weeks of application approval. Keep copies of all submitted documents.
The battery is required for the Oncor rebate. These three models are the most popular in the DFW area, well-supported by local installers, and optimized for the Texas climate and ERCOT grid.
Most popular battery in TX. Built-in solar inverter. Seamless whole-home backup. One unit provides 12-24 hours of essential load backup.
Modular design — start small, add units later. Pairs perfectly with Enphase microinverters. Excellent for partial-home backup. Best warranty in the industry (15 years).
True whole-home backup capability without a critical loads panel. aPower management system automatically manages loads. Higher capacity than Powerwall 3. Indoor or outdoor rated.
Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 exposed the vulnerability of the Texas power grid. Battery storage is not just about saving money in Texas — it is about keeping your family safe during grid emergencies.
4.5 million Texas homes lost power for days during freezing temperatures in February 2021. Over 200 deaths and billions in damage. The ERCOT grid came within minutes of total collapse. Battery storage demand in Texas surged 300%+ after Uri as homeowners sought energy independence.
ERCOT is launching the Distributed Resource Registration System (DRRS) in 2026. Residential batteries and solar systems will be able to participate in grid services for the first time. Homeowners could earn credits by allowing ERCOT to dispatch stored energy during grid emergencies. Compensation rates are being finalized — this could improve battery ROI significantly.
Estimates based on a 10 kW solar system with one 13.5 kWh battery (Tesla Powerwall 3). Actual runtime varies by household usage and weather conditions. For full-home backup during extended outages (like Uri), 2+ battery units (27+ kWh) are recommended. Solar recharges the battery during daytime — with sun and moderate usage, a solar + battery system can sustain essential loads indefinitely.
Three scenarios for DFW solar + battery with the Oncor rebate. All scenarios assume $0.15/kWh DFW average rate, 3% annual rate increase, and include the 100% TX property tax exemption.
No federal 25D credit (expired). Oncor rebate is the primary incentive. Annual savings assumes $0.15/kWh average rate in DFW and 70% self-consumption.
Enphase modular system. Slightly lower battery capacity but excellent 15-year warranty. Add more units later if needed.
Zero upfront cost. Financing company claims 30% ITC (48/48E) and passes savings as lower payments. You save ~$50/month vs grid. Oncor rebate typically retained by TPO company to lower your lease rate.
