Get a Free QuoteTNMP serves ~270,000 customers across scattered Texas regions — DFW suburbs, Waco, Temple, Galveston County, and Midland/Odessa. Like Oncor, TNMP is a TDU in the ERCOT deregulated market. You choose your REP. Here's what that means for solar.

Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP) is one of four Transmission and Distribution Utilities (TDUs) operating in the ERCOT deregulated electricity market. Like Oncor (DFW/North TX), CenterPoint (Houston), and AEP Texas (South TX), TNMP owns the physical power lines, transformers, and meters in its service territory — but does not supply your electricity.
You choose a separate Retail Electric Provider (REP) — like Green Mountain, TXU, Chariot, or Gexa — for your actual power supply and solar buyback rates. TNMP handles the infrastructure and, critically, the solar interconnection approval that lets your panels connect to the grid.
Good news for solar shoppers: Because TNMP is in ERCOT, you have the same REP-shopping advantage as Oncor and AEP Texas customers. You can choose a solar-friendly REP for the highest possible export credits — up to 8–10¢/kWh with the right plan.
Unlike Oncor (concentrated in DFW and North TX) or CenterPoint (Houston metro), TNMP's service territory is geographically scattered across multiple disconnected regions of Texas. This is a legacy of acquisitions and rural electric franchise history.
Cities: Granbury, Cleburne, Stephenville, Mineral Wells, Aledo
Southwest of Fort Worth; overlaps with Oncor territory borders
Cities: Waco, Temple, Belton, Corsicana, Killeen area (portions)
Strong solar production; growing solar installer market
Cities: Galveston Island, Texas City (portions), La Marque
Coastal humidity; hurricane exposure; salt air installation considerations
Cities: Midland (portions), Odessa (portions)
Highest solar irradiance in TX; sparse competition may affect pricing
Cities: Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Longview (portions)
More cloud cover; lowest production in TNMP territory
How to confirm your TDU: Check your electric bill — the "Delivery Charges" will list TNMP if you're a TNMP customer. You can also verify your TDU at PowerToChoose.org by entering your address.
Both TNMP and Oncor are ERCOT TDUs — so the overall structure is the same. But there's one major difference that matters for solar homeowners:
| Feature | TNMP | Oncor |
|---|---|---|
| Market Type | ERCOT Deregulated | ERCOT Deregulated |
| Can Choose REP? | Yes | Yes |
| Customers Served | ~270,000 | ~4 million |
| Battery Rebate | None | Up to $9,000 |
| Interconnection Time | 30–60 days | 30–60 days |
| Service Area | Scattered TX regions | DFW + North TX core |
| Installer Competition | Variable by region | High (DFW market) |
| Property Tax Exemption | 100% (statewide) | 100% (statewide) |
No TNMP Battery Rebate
Oncor's "Take a Load Off Texas" program pays up to $5,000 for solar + $4,000 for battery = $9,000 total. TNMP customers are not eligible for this rebate. If you're near the Oncor/TNMP border (e.g., Fort Worth suburbs), verify your exact TDU before committing — service territory boundaries can be hyperlocal.
The TNMP interconnection process follows the ERCOT standardized framework, similar to Oncor and AEP Texas. Your installer handles all applications on your behalf. The process typically takes 30–60 days for residential systems:
Your solar installer submits TNMP's Distributed Generation interconnection application. TNMP, like other ERCOT TDUs, uses a standardized ERCOT interconnection process. Application fees typically run $100–$200.
TNMP engineers review your system design against local circuit capacity. Residential systems under 10 kW typically receive a simplified ("Level 1") review. Larger systems may require a detailed study.
TNMP issues PTI, allowing installation to proceed. Your installer coordinates local city/county permitting in parallel. TNMP territory spans many jurisdictions with varying permit timelines.
Panels and inverters are installed. Local inspections required before TNMP will schedule a meter upgrade. Check your specific jurisdiction's permit timeline — Granbury, Waco, and Galveston each differ.
TNMP upgrades your meter to a bi-directional interval meter that tracks solar production and grid exports. Permission to Operate is then issued and your system goes live.
Your solar buyback rate is determined by your REP, not TNMP. TNMP installs the bi-directional meter; your REP sets the credit rate. Choosing the right REP before or after installation can significantly improve your solar ROI.
| REP | Export Rate | Plan Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green Mountain EnergyTop Pick | ~8–10¢/kWh | Sell All / Green Buyback | Best overall buyback in TNMP territory; 100% renewable |
| Chariot EnergyTop Pick | ~6–9¢/kWh | Solar Buyback | Solar-focused; competitive flat rates in TNMP service areas |
| Gexa Energy | ~5–7¢/kWh | Net Metering Credit | Good mid-tier option with solid customer service |
| TXU Energy | ~3–5¢/kWh | Energy Credit | Available but lower buyback than solar-focused REPs |
| Reliant Energy | ~4–6¢/kWh | Solar Payback Rewards | Decent plans; some battery-friendly TOU options available |
REP availability varies: Not all REPs serve all TNMP regions. Rural TNMP areas in East Texas or the Permian Basin may have fewer REP options than Waco or DFW suburbs. Always verify REP availability for your specific ZIP code at PowerToChoose.org.
Solar costs in TNMP territory vary by region due to differences in installer competition, local permitting costs, and climate factors. The federal 25D residential tax credit expired December 31, 2025 — all costs below are full out-of-pocket:
| Region | Cost/Watt | 10 kW System | Payback Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| DFW Suburbs (Granbury, Cleburne) | $2.60–$3.00/W | $26,000–$30,000 | 8–11 years |
| Central TX (Waco, Temple) | $2.55–$2.90/W | $25,500–$29,000 | 8–11 years |
| Permian Basin (Midland/Odessa) | $2.70–$3.20/W | $27,000–$32,000 | 7–10 years |
| Galveston / Gulf Coast | $2.80–$3.30/W | $28,000–$33,000 | 9–13 years |
No Federal 25D Credit in 2026
Residential tax credit expired December 31, 2025. Zero federal rebate.
Texas Property Tax Exemption
100% of solar-added home value exempt from property taxes — all TNMP counties qualify.
TNMP homeowners in West Texas, Waco, Galveston, and beyond can access Propel — NuWatt's $0 down financing that lets a third-party owner install FEOC-compliant Silfab 440W panels and claim the 40% Section 48E ITC, passing the savings to you as a fixed monthly payment. An 8 kW system at $2.90/W ($23,200) becomes ~$13,920 effective cost at ~$117/month. 8.99% APR, 25-year term, 660 FICO minimum. Must begin construction before July 4, 2026.
